KRISTIN ROMBERG

As an artist, I explore the delicate balance between humans and nature, with a focus on the fate of insects—a critical but often overlooked environmental issue. Working with acrylic on untreated canvas, I use vibrant colors and dynamic compositions to evoke a deeper understanding of our natural world. My art is both a tribute to nature’s beauty and a call to action, encouraging mindfulness in how we interact with the environment.

Since 2001, I’ve been creating large-format paintings, drawing inspiration from my extensive travels and residencies around the globe. My work often transcends the traditional canvas, inviting viewers into a tactile, layered experience that echoes the complexities of nature. Whether suspended from thin cords or layered on walls, my paintings are a reflection of my connection to the places I’ve explored and the inner force that drives my creative process.

My Story

I’m Kristin Romberg, a Norwegian visual artist with a deep connection to the natural world. Since 2001, I’ve been creating large-format abstract paintings that invite viewers into vibrant, tactile spaces. My art is rooted in my surroundings—whether it's the forests and seas near my home in Fredrikstad, or the various landscapes I’ve encountered during my travels and residencies across the globe.

My journey to becoming an artist began when I was 15. Despite initial resistance, I pursued my passion, studying at the University of Sydney’s fine art department, Westerdals School of Advertising, and Einar Granum Art School. I worked in advertising for several years before fully dedicating myself to my art.

In recent years, I’ve shifted towards installation art, where my paintings are suspended in layers, creating immersive experiences. I believe in art that not only engages the eyes but also invites touch, encouraging a deep, emotional connection with the work. My process is intuitive and deeply personal—each stroke and color choice is a reflection of my inner experiences and the natural environments I explore.

I’m fortunate to work in diverse spaces, from a communal studio in an old hydrogen factory to a vast, borrowed shipyard. These spaces allow me to experiment and create on a large scale, further enhancing the immersive quality of my work.

Through my art, I aim to evoke the sensation of wandering through a dense forest or jungle, where viewers can pause, breathe, and feel a sense of wonder. My works are a non-verbal dialogue between the memories of places I’ve visited and the present moment, offering a hint of optimism and connection to the world around us.
